Hotel Mlýn ****

The Mlýn /Mill/ Hotel (the name relates closely to the building in which it is situated) can be found in the Velehrad community, 7 km north-west from Uherské Hradiště. The present community of Velehrad has been spread out around the former Cistercian monastery, in the Salaška brook dale. The monastery foundation initiated by Robert, bishop of Olomouc, Vladislav Jindřich, margrave of Moravia and at a contribution of Přemysl Otakar I, Czech king, dates back to the beginning of the 13th century. History of the monastery itself started towards the end of 1205 when a 12 member group of monks from the monastery of Plasy near Plzeň came here. As a temporary monastery recourse there was used the St. Jan monastery built as early as at the beginning of the 9th century and already abandoned at that time. A replica of its church is standing on a hillock above the crossing of roads Velehrad - Modrá. At the beginning of the 13th century, a mill with a farmstead and grounds located on Salaška under the current Vaněk´s gardening belonged to that church. After steady monastery stone buildings were built up, necessary farm buildings - including a mill naturally, rose around the monastery. In course of time, the mill received the name "Horní mlýn /Upper mill/" due to its location. Nevertheless, we can find that "Horní mlýn" in written sources as late as in 1477 when it was destroyed during the Czech-Hungarian wars. Due to low profitability after the Thirty Year War, the monastery began to hire out the farm buildings. On a monastery conflagration in 1723, also the Upper Mill was burnt down. But it was undoubtedly rebuilt. Two years earlier than the monastery was cancelled by emperor Josef II in 1784, the mill was sold. Thus it did not throw its lot with the rest of the monastery dominion. The mill remained in private possession till the 50th of the 20th century. Up to that time, it was ever used to its original purpose. In the 90th of the last century, the present owners rebuilt the building of the former mill to a luxurious hotel and its current appearance - except of small exceptions, is a result of just their work.
